Is Pursuing Higher Education Worth The Cost?

Image
Is Pursuing Higher Education Worth The Cost?          By Samir Ramessar  For the past few decades now, our society has been faced with the question on whether or not college is worth the price. Personally, I would say college is not worth the financial strain. Due to a number of issues, college has become less and less desirable. Alternate routes are seemingly becoming more optimal.Colleges no longer hold the same merit that they used to. And college is seemingly becoming less of a requirement for true success. Many are  finding success without a college degree.  The cost of college has seemingly skyrocketed over the past few decades. Making it unobtainable for most; without causing severe debt. U.S citizens have over a combined one trillion dollars in debt. Student loan debt, while not a new concern, has become an abundantly worse issue. More and more people are taking out massive loans, with no clear plan of pay...

Is Fast Food The New Tobacco?

Image
Is fast food the new tobacco?   While fast food is undoubtedly addictive to a degree; it’s by no means comparable to tobacco. Tobacco has nicotine in it, this the driving factor behind the addiction. While fast food can be hard to put down, it isn’t outright addictive.Yes, because of its strategic marketing and convenience; fast food has become the primary food source for many. But cigarettes/tobacco are a completely different ball park.   As someone that has a loved one who’s a heavy smoker, I feel that I have firsthand experience with the subject matter. To a smoker; cigarettes are their air, they need it to keep living. Their body becomes dependent on it. After years and years of smoking, they can’t put it down. While fast food on the other hand, can be addicting due to its taste; it can be put down.   Nicotine is one of, if not the most addictive thing on the planet. With researchers saying it may take numerous att...

Is Pop Culture good for you?

Is pop culture good for you?                                                    By Samir Ramessar   I personally believe that pop culture is good for us as a society. It provides entertainment, while also giving us a glimpse into the current social climate. Pop culture allows us as a society to let loose and have fun; this idea is explored in the “Why Pop Culture” ted talk, by Alexandre O. Philippe. In his Ted Talk, Alexandre explains how pop culture allows us to have fun and connect. He mentions events such as San Diego Comic Con, a breeding ground of pop culture. People show up in droves to discuss and show off their favorite characters an...

Introduction to Literacy                                                                          By Samir Ramessar My introduction to literacy began when I was four to five years old. I was in kindergarten at the time. Every evening when I got home from school, my mother would read children’s books with me; going over each and every word teaching me how to properly enunciate them.  However, this habit would expand as the years went on, I began to read the Magic Treehouse series by Mary Pope Osborne. The Magic treehouse books were a staple of my childhood; I vividly remember going to the library and finding one to read. Reading became a pillar in my life, something that I woul...
